Ember & Grain Studio

About the Artist

Hi, I’m Miranda Johnsen — a designer turned pyrography artist based in the Kootenays. Ember & Grain is my creative studio where I blend found wood, quiet patience, and storytelling through fire. I focus on simplicity, depth, and the natural beauty of the grain. Each piece I create is an exploration of nature, memory, and place.

My background in product design and visual storytelling helps me craft pieces that are both artful and intentional. Whether it’s the soft gaze of an owl or the still strength of a wolf, I aim to draw out emotion through line, burn, and tone.

Featured Work

I’m just getting started on this journey. Here’s a look at what’s complete so far:

Silent Vigil (White Wolf)

A quiet strength carved into grain. This white wolf stands watch – a guardian of stillness, shaped by fire.

Watcher in the Dusk (Owl)

Eyes of midnight, spirit of dusk. Burned into Basswood, this owl captures the mystery of nightfall.

Still in Flight (Hummingbird)

A moment suspended in grain. This hummingbird was burned by hand – delicate, fleeting, eternal.

If interested, the above designs can be made to order. Each piece will be similar but not exact, since each piece is burned individually and each piece of wood will have its own uniqueness. More pieces coming soon as the collection grows.
